From IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies
Integrating technologies into teaching and learning poses a significant challenge for many teachers who lack socio-techno-pedagogical know-how and time to design interventions. A possible solution is to design sound technology-enhanced learning (TEL) environments with relevant content and pedagogical tools to reduce teachers' design efforts. Technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) is a promising framework for understanding how teachers could integrate technologies into classrooms.
Changing Distributions: How Online College Classes Alter Student and Professor Performance
From Stanford CEPA
Online college courses are a rapidly expanding feature of higher education, yet little research identifies their effects. Using an instrumental variables approach and data from DeVry University, this study finds that, on average, online course-taking reduces student learning by one-third to one-quarter of a standard deviation compared to conventional in-person classes.Taking a course online also reduces student learning in future courses and persistence in college.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have joined lead investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield& Byers in a $15 million round of funding for Newsela. The news education startup adapts news articles for students and delivers them online, along with quizzes that aim to tell teachers and parents what students are still grappling with or learning well.
Language Learning Beyond the Classroom
Edited by David Nunan and Jack C.Richards
This volume presents case studies of language learning beyond the classroom. The studies draw on a wide range of contexts. Each case provides principled links between theory, research and practice.
While out-of-class learning will not replace the classroom, ultimately all successful learners take control of their own learning. This book shows how teachers can help learners bridge the gap between formal instruction and autonomous language learning.
This volume focuses on computer- and digitally-assisted language learning in all of its forms: technology-enhanced language learning, network-based language learning, mobile-assisted language learning and so on, in close relation to the topic of sustainability. How can these technologies and techniques be implemented in a sustainable and repeatable way? The volume samples research and practice in CALL from around the world, organised into sections. It covers the state of the art at the moment and directions it is likely to take in the future.
