Founded in 1941, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China (MOE). Offering most foreign language programs among universities in China, 101 in total, BFSU serves as a national centre for the teaching and research of foreign languages, foreign literature, and international studies. It is also a major training centre for foreign language talents, especially professional interpreters and translators. About 5,700 full-time undergraduates and 3,900 postgraduates study foreign languages and relevant subjects at the university while about 1,300 international students are studying Chinese here. In 2021, the university completed the pilot work under the first round of MOE programs to promote AI application for faculty development in Chinese universities, and released BFSU Initiatives on Empowering University Teachers through AI Technology.
BFSU distinguishes itself in the following three aspects. First of all, it is recognized for its excellence in teaching and research: it is the recipient of numerous national awards for teaching excellence and the host to more than 10 top ranking national research centres. Secondly, it has been known as the “cradle of Chinese diplomats”: in the span of its 80 years history, BFSU has produced over 400 Chinese ambassadors to other countries, and over 2,000 embassy counsellors. The third aspect is its effective cooperation with foreign universities and cultural institutions on education and research: BFSU has cooperative projects with 324 universities and academic institutions from 81 countries and regions.
